Chapter 22
The next morning, when Grandma Puckett took Peter and Kendall to IHOP for breakfast, they couldnât have been happier. Daddy had taken them there sometimes, but Mommy never did. Kendall had blueberry pancakes, while Peter ordered the ones made with chocolate chips. Grandma Puckett had scrambled eggs and toast.
There was a question Kendall had been wanting to ask. Sheâd been thinking about it in bed overnight, but it wasnât until breakfast that she managed to work up her nerve.
âCould Peter and me come live with you in Casa Grande?â Kendall asked quietly.
Grandma put down her coffee cup. ââCould Peter and I come,â not âPeter and me,ââ she corrected. âBut, Kendall, Iâm far too old to be raising kids. Why would you even ask such a thing?â
Because you feed us, Kendall thought, chasing a stray blueberry around on her plate. Because youâre nice to us.
There were lots of things Kendall could have said, but she chose the one she thought might work. âBecause I donât like Randy,â she said aloud. âHe scares me. He has mean eyes.â
Grandmaâs expression hardened, but when she spoke, her voice was full of concern. âScares you how?â she wanted to know. âHas he ever hurt you?â
Kendall nodded.
âHow? What did he do?â
âHe grabbed me by the shoulder and shook meâreal hard. His thumb left a bruise right here.â Kendall pointed to a spot just under her collarbone.
âHas he ever hurt Peter?â
Kendall shook her head. âI try to keep Peter out of Randyâs way so that wonât happen,â she whispered.
A waitress stopped by the table and refilled Grandma Puckettâs coffee cup.
âI donât like Randy either,â Peter muttered when the waitress walked away. âI saw him kick Coon once.â
âYour dog?â Grandma asked, frowning. âThatâs terrible. I noticed the dog wasnât here, but . . .â
âMommy said he got out of the yard and got hit by a car,â Kendall supplied.
âAnd the vet couldnât fix him,â Peter added. âSo Coonâs dead, too, just like Daddy.â
âIâm so sorry to hear that,â Grandma said. âYou really loved that dog, didnât you?â
Peter nodded. âHe always slept at the bottom of my bed and kept my feet warm.â
After IHOP they went to Walmart. Kendall was amazed. While she pushed the grocery cart, Grandma Puckett filled it up with all kinds of thingsâpairs of pants, shirts, socks, and underwear for both of them. They each got two new pairs of shoes, âone for school and one for dress-up,â Grandma Puckett said.
Kendall thought that the word âdress-upâ really meant that those were the shoes they should wear to Daddyâs funeral. The same held true for the dress shirt and clip-on tie for Peter and the pretty new dark blue dress for Kendallâthe nicest one she ever remembered having. Not only that, they both ended up with brand-new jacketsâwarm ones. There were other things, too, like new toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste. Kendall thought this was way better than Christmas.
When they got to the checkout counter, Grandma didnât complain about how much everything cost. She just got out her credit card, put it in the slot, and pretty soon the receipt came out.
